Jaguar Type 01 Revealed: Inside the 1,000-HP Electric GT Built to Restart Jaguar

Two years after a pink concept car and a rebrand that half the internet loved to hate, Jaguar has finally shown the car it is betting the brand on. The Type 01 rolled into a gallery in West Chelsea on the night of October 6: a long, low, four-door electric GT with more than 1,000 horsepower, a targeted 400 miles of range and a US starting price of $130,500.

It is the first production car of Jaguar’s reinvention and the first built on its new electric platform, and Jaguar calls it the most powerful and most aerodynamic car it has ever made. We gathered everything shown so far: the reveal film, the camouflaged prototypes in Monaco and at Pebble Beach, the cabin, the engineering and the numbers, plus what we still don’t know.

A night in New York

Jaguar started teasing days before the embargo lifted. From October 2, the 100-foot JPMorgan Chase screen at 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue in Times Square flashed the car’s strikethrough graphic and its laser-etched leaper every 15 minutes, a hint for anyone looking up.

On reveal night, the car took over screens in Times Square, DUMBO and the Lower East Side, then arrived for real: Formula E driver António Félix da Costa drove it through closed streets on the West Side to STORIED, a venue in West Chelsea. Inside, Jaguar named the actor Florence Pugh as the first ambassador of its new era, and the singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro played a short set. Jaguar called it the biggest moment since the Jaguar name was born in 1935, and closed its announcement with three words: Jaguar is back.

The film itself is worth a minute of your time. It opens in darkness, draws the car as a single line of light (Jaguar says the whole design started from one line on a blank sheet), and ends with the Type 01 out on a bridge at night.

From Type 00 to Type 01

The story really starts in December 2024, when Jaguar showed the Type 00 concept in Miami two weeks after its “Copy Nothing” rebrand film set off a storm online. The two-door show car, painted Miami Pink and London Blue, then toured the world and turned up on the streets of Paris, where it looked almost too strange to be real.

Here is the twist: the production car came first. According to Hagerty, the Type 01 design was settled before the concept, and the Type 00 was developed from it. Autocar reports that the designers built 18 full-size models before landing on this shape.

Monaco, in disguise

The first time most people saw the real shape was in May, when Type 01 prototypes lapped the Monaco street circuit the day before the E-Prix: past Sainte-Dévote, through Casino Square, around La Rascasse. Their wrap was an art piece of its own, built from Jaguar’s strikethrough lines and big circular strokes in the brand’s new colors, and it showed off the proportions better than any spy shot had.

Monaco was not just a photo op. Jaguar says the Type 01 was tuned with know-how from its championship-winning Formula E team, including the all-wheel-drive control software and the fast-switching silicon carbide inverters that manage power to the motors.

Three months later the prototype crossed the Atlantic in a new blue wrap for Monterey Car Week, ending at the Pebble Beach Concours on August 16.

The shape

In production form the Type 01 kept almost everything that made the concept so divisive, and it gained two doors. It is about 208 inches long and just 55 inches tall, longer and lower than a Porsche Panamera, with a long flat hood, a chopped roof and a cabin pushed far back.

That last detail is the one Jaguar wants you to notice. The gap between the front axle and the base of the windshield takes up 17 percent of the car’s length, exactly as it did on the E-type, and a slim bar of trim called the Fender Ingot runs along it, the only place on the car that still wears the classic leaper.

Up front there is no grille, just a ribbed panel with the new Jaguar wordmark and pixel headlights that Jaguar says are the slimmest it has ever made, 3.3 inches tall. The strakes at the base of the windshield carry straight through into the dashboard. Out back there is no rear window at all. A camera in the roof fin feeds a display inside, and the tail is a wall of more than a dozen horizontal strakes with the taillights hidden between them, glowing only when they are needed. Jaguar says the rear lighting alone took 4,000 hours of engineering.

It slips through the air, too. Jaguar quotes a drag coefficient of 0.23 after more than 7,000 wind tunnel tests, with a three-stage rear spoiler that deploys on its own and air suspension that drops the car by more than half an inch at highway speed. Wheels are 21 inches as standard and 23 inches as an option.

The Impossible Panel

Our favorite part of the whole car has the best name, too. The Impossible Panel is a single pressing that forms the side of the roof, the rear pillar and the entire rear fender, and it is folded into a set of sharp creases that look like a flick of a pen. Jaguar says the usual industry rule allows no more than three planes and no sharp angles on one panel, and that this one breaks it.

Making it takes a six-stage cold forming process in a press four stories tall, pushing with 2,500 tons, and engineers spent 1,500 hours working out how to do it. The window seals are hidden by a tight hemming technique, which is why the side glass looks so clean, with no trim around it. Jaguar showed one at the reveal as a sculpture on its own!

Inside

The cabin was revealed first, back in August, and it is calmer than the outside. A central spine runs the full length of the car, about 3.2 meters, and splits it into four separate seats, each its own little room. Its brass-like finish repeats along the tops of the doors, where it carries the leaper.

Jaguar resisted the giant tablet. A 24-inch OLED display sits ahead of the driver, and a phone-sized 7-inch touchscreen on the spine handles climate, seats and media, with a matching screen for the rear. Jaguar calls the idea “control on demand”: compartments, storage and tech stay hidden until you need them. The rear-view camera image appears in a slim display at the base of the windshield, level with the door mirrors, so your eyes barely move. That display sits in a soundbar with 13 speakers, part of a 38-speaker Meridian system.

The materials draw on travertine stone and woven textiles: three interior themes called The Light Story, The Dark Story and The Original Story, leather or Ultrafabrics NeoGrain, and a Kvadrat wool-blend textile made with recycled material that even covers the floors. The front seats adjust 12 ways and include a hot stone massage, and the rear seats are heated and cooled. Behind them is 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space, or 35 with the seats folded. The front trunk is small, sized for an emergency kit.

Under the skin

The Type 01 is the first car on Jaguar Electric Architecture, a platform built for this kind of long, low four-door GT. A 118 kWh battery sits low in the chassis. Three motors share the work: one up front, two at the rear. Jaguar quotes up to 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 lb-ft of torque, 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and 62 to 112 mph in another 4 seconds. In its Dynamic mode up to 87 percent of the torque goes to the rear wheels, and the rear motors disconnect when you are cruising, to save energy.

The chassis numbers read like a sports car’s: double wishbones up front, a multilink rear, twin-chamber air springs, adaptive dampers that adjust 1,000 times a second, rear-wheel steering up to 6 degrees and a 50:50 weight split. The turning circle is reported to be about the same as a compact car’s. It has not published a curb weight, and outlets that rode in prototypes put it close to 6,000 pounds.

Charging is where the 850-volt system earns its keep. At a 350 kW station, Jaguar says the Type 01 adds 200 miles in about 13 minutes and goes from 10 to 80 percent in 22. On older 400-volt chargers it can still take up to 250 kW, thanks to what Jaguar calls split charging. There are AC charge doors on both front fenders, with DC fast charging on the passenger side, and Jaguar says it will work with NACS, so Superchargers should be on the menu. When real charge tests arrive, it goes into our EV Charging Speed Chart.

On range, Jaguar quotes 400 miles as a US EPA estimate and 450 miles on the European WLTP cycle, which Autocar reports. More useful is the number Jaguar volunteered itself: about 320 miles at a steady 75 mph, the figure that matters on a long highway trip.

Range and starting prices from the Electric Future Range Chart, checked October 7, 2026. The Type 01 figure is Jaguar’s US estimate and its price is Jaguar’s US starting price.

Price, colors and when you can get one

The Type 01 starts at $130,500 in the US, likely before destination, and at £130,000 in the UK. Order books open in early 2027 and Jaguar expects first deliveries in the second half of the year, which makes it a 2028 model in the US. It is designed, engineered and built in the UK.

Launch colors come in gloss (Compelling Blue, Dramatic White, Iconic Black, Refined Grey and Visionary Silver) and satin (Mesmerizing Copper, Modernist Blue and Visionary Silver Satin). For louder tastes, a collection called Chromatic Moments will be limited to 60 cars in either French Ultramarine, a satin blue taken from Renaissance painting, or London Red.

Jaguar’s managing director, Rawdon Glover, told Robb Report that more than 50,000 people have registered interest and that 78 percent of them are new to Jaguar. That second number matters. Glover also said Jaguar’s average US transaction price used to sit around $60,000 to $70,000, so the brand is asking its future buyers to spend about twice what its past buyers did.

Our take

We have been quietly rooting for this since the first rebrand film. Plenty of people hated it, but it got the whole world arguing about Jaguar again, and the car had to be good enough to justify the noise. Having gone through every photo and every number Jaguar has released, we think the design holds up. The production car is remarkably close to the concept, and the best ideas in it, the Impossible Panel, the hidden taillights, the strakes running from hood to dash, are the kind that only happen when designers and engineers push in the same direction.

The open questions are real, though. A car this heavy has to prove it can drive like a Jaguar. No rear window and small side glass will not suit everyone. And $130,500 is roughly double what Jaguar’s US buyers used to spend, asked at a time when Jaguar Land Rover is still recovering from last year’s cyberattack, which halted its production, and announced 4,000 job cuts last month. Whatever happens, there is nothing else on the road that looks like it, and in a sea of EVs that look the same, we will take that.

What we are still verifying

The 400-mile range is Jaguar’s estimate, not an official EPA rating, and Jaguar has not yet published curb weight, wheelbase, trim levels or what the $130,500 car includes. Its power figures are “up to,” so there may be more than one version. When the official EPA label arrives, the Type 01 goes into our EV Range Chart, and we will update this story.
