
MG has pulled the wraps off the MG 4X, its first-ever electric SUV in the MG4 family — and it comes with a technology first: a semi-solid-state battery fitted as standard across all trim levels. The reveal marks a significant step for the brand, which is owned by China’s SAIC Motor, as it pushes into the increasingly competitive compact electric SUV segment.
A Battery Breakthrough Built In
The headline feature is the MG 4X’s 53.95 kWh manganese-based semi-solid-state battery, supplied by Suzhou Qingtao Power. What makes it semi-solid-state is its dramatically reduced liquid electrolyte content — just 5% compared to the ~30% in conventional lithium-ion cells. That shift improves thermal stability significantly, meaning the battery handles both extreme cold and heat better than traditional packs, with reduced fire risk to boot.
On a single charge, MG claims a range of 530 km (329 miles) on the CLTC cycle, which translates to a realistic ~430–460 km in real-world conditions — impressive for a battery of this size. Fast charging takes the pack from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

Sharp New Styling
Visually, the MG 4X takes a bold step away from the hatchback MG4 it shares a platform with. Up front, triangular LED headlights flank a full-width light bar and an illuminated MG logo. A wide two-tier lower grille completes a face that feels assertive and modern without being overdone. The profile is clean, with a sharp waistline, a commanding roofline with an integrated panoramic glass roof, and meaningful ground clearance that sells its SUV credentials.
Around back, sculpted taillights and a pronounced spoiler tie the design together. The MG 4X measures 4,400mm long, 1,800mm wide, and 1,600mm tall — genuinely compact by SUV standards, putting it squarely alongside rivals like the BYD Atto 2 and Leapmotor B10.

Power and Platform
The MG 4X rides on SAIC’s E3 electronic architecture — the same platform underpinning the latest MG4 hatchback. Entry-level versions get a 125 kW (168 hp) electric motor, while higher trims step up to a 150 kW (201 hp) unit. Both drive the front wheels. SAIC has confirmed a full-reveal at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2026, where additional variants — potentially including a dual-motor AWD model — may be announced.
Smart Cabin Tech
Inside, the MG 4X features an infotainment system powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform, co-developed with Oppo. The “Hand-Car Interconnection” system enables seamless, lag-free mirroring and integration between the driver’s smartphone and the car’s displays — going beyond standard CarPlay or Android Auto to create a more unified digital experience.

Pricing and Availability
MG has positioned the 4X as a value-forward entry into the semi-solid-state era. For the Australian market, pricing is expected to start around $35,000 AUD, though official figures await the Beijing Motor Show announcement. Chinese domestic pricing is expected to be lower, consistent with SAIC’s local pricing strategy. Global markets beyond China and Australia are expected to follow later in 2026.
Why It Matters
Semi-solid-state batteries have been talked about as the next major leap in EV technology for years, but widespread adoption has been slow. The fact that MG is making this tech standard across all trims of a mass-market compact SUV — rather than an expensive flagship option — is a genuinely significant move. It signals that the technology is maturing toward real-world, volume production viability.
If the range claims hold up in real-world testing and pricing stays competitive, the MG 4X could be one of the most compelling electric SUV launches of 2026.
