Buick just launched a new luxury electric van in China, and it’s a good reminder that Buick over there is basically a completely different brand.

The new model is called the Electra Encasa, a large three-row electric MPV built through GM’s SAIC-GM joint venture. Pricing starts around 439,900 yuan, or roughly $60,000 to $70,000 depending on the trim.

This is a big vehicle aimed squarely at China’s booming luxury van market. It stretches over 5.2 meters long and comes with a spacious three-row interior designed for comfort as much as transportation.

Think lounge-style seats, large displays, and the kind of rear passenger experience that matters a lot more in China than it does in the U.S.

Performance is surprisingly strong too. Early specs suggest a dual-motor setup producing roughly 640 horsepower, which is an enormous amount of power for what is essentially a family van.

If this all sounds more ambitious than Buick’s lineup in North America, that’s because it is. Buick has been hugely successful in China for years, and the brand carries far more prestige there than it does in the United States. China is now Buick’s largest market, and it’s where the company often launches its most advanced vehicles.

So while Buick in the U.S. mostly sells practical SUVs, Buick in China is out here building high-tech electric luxury vans with 600+ horsepower. Different audience, different expectations.
