Volkswagen’s Jetta X concept hints at a cheaper, more approachable EV future in China

Volkswagen is giving the Jetta name a pretty unexpected new job. At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the company revealed the Jetta X concept, a boxy electric SUV that previews where its China-only Jetta sub-brand is headed next.
The bigger idea is simple: Volkswagen wants Jetta to help it compete in the more affordable EV space, especially in a market where price and tech matter a lot.

If you are outside China, this setup might sound a little strange. In China, Jetta is not just a sedan nameplate. It has been its own entry-level brand since 2019, created with FAW to target budget-minded buyers. Up to now, that lineup has mostly focused on gas-powered vehicles, but the shift is clearly happening. Jetta is moving into electrified models, including fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

The Jetta X concept also feels like a step forward visually. Volkswagen says it follows a new “Modern Robust” design direction, and that tracks. It looks upright, clean, and a lot more current than some of the older Jetta-branded vehicles sold in China. It is the kind of SUV design that feels easy to understand right away: practical, a little tough-looking, and clearly built to appeal to everyday buyers.

Inside, it follows the same formula a lot of new EVs are using right now. There are big screens, a digital-heavy layout, and a passenger display that leans into the idea that modern cars are becoming more like connected devices on wheels. That is especially important in China, where buyers tend to expect a lot of in-car tech, smart features, and a more seamless digital experience.

What makes this concept more interesting is the bigger strategy behind it. With Skoda stepping back in China, Jetta is starting to look like Volkswagen Group’s main value-focused brand there. So this is not just some random concept car meant to grab attention at an auto show. It feels more like a preview of how Volkswagen plans to stay relevant in a market where local automakers are moving fast and affordable EV competition is intense.
It is still too early to know how close this concept is to the final production version, but the direction is pretty clear. Volkswagen wants a more accessible electric lineup in China, and Jetta is going to play a big role in making that happen.
