San Francisco Moves to Install Curbside EV Chargers Across City Streets

Chargers far more accessible for city dwellers

One of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption in dense cities is surprisingly simple: where do you charge if you don’t have a garage?

In a city where many residents live in apartments and rely on street parking, San Francisco is taking a step toward solving that problem. City leaders have introduced legislation that would create a streamlined process for installing curbside EV charging stations directly on neighborhood streets.

The proposal builds on a pilot program launched in 2025 that installed a handful of curbside chargers in neighborhoods like Duboce Triangle. Early results have shown strong demand from residents who otherwise struggle to access convenient charging options.

If the program moves forward, the city hopes to install around 100 curbside chargers by 2030, with private charging companies funding the installations while the city oversees permitting and locations.

Solving the “Apartment Charging” Problem

Unlike suburban EV owners who can plug in at home, many urban drivers face a daily challenge: finding a reliable place to charge.

Curbside charging could dramatically expand access by placing chargers directly along public streets. For renters and residents of multi-unit buildings, that could make owning an EV far more practical.

Officials say the new permitting framework would make it easier for charging providers to install stations citywide while ensuring the infrastructure meets city standards and neighborhood needs.

A Growing Need as EV Adoption Accelerates

Demand for EV charging is rising quickly in the city. Over the past few years, a large share of new car sales in San Francisco have already shifted toward electric vehicles.

Expanding public charging infrastructure is also key to the city’s broader climate goals. San Francisco is targeting net-zero emissions by 2040, and transportation electrification will play a major role in getting there.

The Future of Urban Charging

Curbside charging is quickly becoming one of the most promising solutions for dense cities around the world. Instead of relying solely on parking garages or fast-charging hubs, cities can integrate EV charging directly into everyday street parking.

If San Francisco’s plan succeeds, it could become a model for other urban centers trying to make EV ownership practical for everyone, not just homeowners with garages.

In the long run, the humble curbside parking spot may become one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in the electric transportation revolution.
