BMW Previews Their New Panoramic iDrive

BMW has used iDrive systems in their cars now for 24 years.

In that time, the systems have evolved, the screen size has grown, and the technology has improved.

As drivers of a BMW iX, we can attest that the technology is already quite good, with clean, sharp graphics, a reliable iDrive control wheel, plus the advent of gesture control, which is a great party trick, but also handy in a pinch.

Now, with the forthcoming launch of the Neue Klasse models in 2025 and 2026, a brand new system is coming, dubbed Panoramic iDrive.

It involves a large, driver oriented display with unique angles, plus a pillar-to-pillar micro-LED display that is right up by the windscreen.

BMW demonstrated this new system at CES, with a huge, human-sized mockup of the displays and steering wheel design, which is also brand new.

The new systems aim to have future-proofed features, better over-the-air updates, and customization that lets users choose which widgets are seen on the upper display.

More holistic interior lighting helps to make the entire cabin look and feel more dynamic.
